2009 IN THE MILL POND
A
new display looking at 'treasures' found in a local mill pond.
Willowbank was originally built as Dam Head Mill (later renamed
Albion Mill). The mill closed a number of years ago and was
converted to apartments - the area with the mill pond help
preserve what a traditional local mill looked like with its
adjacent pond. The exhibition has some of the curiosities that
have been found over the last few years including numerous old
bottles, a mobile phone, a religious icon and a set of false
teeth.

2009 SADDLEWORTH'S THE STAR
A
new small display which looks at what films / TV have used the
Saddleworth area as a backdrop - these include well known ones
such as 'Yanks', 'Brassed Off' and the 'Probation Officer', but
what about 'Jimmy Cricket' as well as 'Cliff Richard' !!!! The
display also lists those around the Oldham area as a whole - so
come to the exhibition to find out why the famous film 'Brief
Encounter' has a link to Oldham.

WHAT DID YOUR ANCESTORS DO ?
It
is amazing really that in our archives collection we have probably
no more than 30 pictures recording people at work in various
trades. It is interesting that most of these have originated as
'personal' snapshots that 'live' in people's family albums.
The
exhibition we hope would prompt people to search there family
albums and lend us pictures of there ancestors at work - whatever
they did from cotton operative, joiner, doctor, solicitor,
teacher, to quarryman etc. We would ask for a piece of history
about each person.
We
always welcome donations to our archives but as these are often 'treasures'
from family album we are more than happy to borrow and scan.
After
the exhibition the material would be added as an interesting
collection into the Archives.
