Materials and Local Industry and Organizations
The
Archives contain material about Saddleworth people at work, at
play and at prayer.
There
are collections of business records particularly relating to the
cotton and woollen industries the major employer. These include a
large archive on Hutchinson & Hollingworth, of Dobcross
Loomworks a major maker and exporter.
Other business records include Saddleworth’s banks and
co-ops. There are
papers of the Saddleworth Victorian architect George Shaw.
Sport
is well represented, particularly cricket played in the
Saddleworth & District League.
There is a comprehensive collection of the poetry and prose
of Saddleworth’s writers including the works and papers of Ammon
Wrigley. The musical
events of the band contests and the Saddleworth Festival are well
covered. Time away
from work was also spent participating in mutual benefit
societies. There are records of the Saddleworth Family Burial Society and
other similar Societies.
Whilst
church records are usually held elsewhere the archive does hold
the records of Delph Independent Chapel.
There are many church histories and individual items such
as bazaar programmes and service sheets.
Saddleworth
Museum is independent and we are reliant on volunteers for a lot
of our work. If you want to visit the archive please e-mail us
with your enquiry and what you are looking for and we will arrange
a time.
