Over the Easter period we had a special trail with chicks instead of characters and every successful chid received a small chocolate Easter egg!

For the summer we have a “BEE trail”.

Whether you take part in the bee trail or not, why not buy one of our own hand-crafted bees for £2?

During the second half of 2019 we launched our “Magic Monday” craft sessions with 4 or 5 activity tables in our community gallery and provided refreshments to purchase for both the children and the accompanying guardian/parent! This format will also be used on special event days also. Please see the “Events” page on this website.

Family Trail

A family visit to our museum galleries would not be complete without picking up one our family trail forms. Please ask for one at the admissions desk.

We change the “theme” every 3 or 4 months. Can your child find the characters or objects we have placed in our gallery cabinets, on low shelves, slightly hidden behind objects on display or at some other “child’s eye level” position? The form will provide clues!

Once you, as a family, have found all the characters or themed objects, and ticked all the boxes, your child can hand in the form at reception. This form often goes into a monthly draw for your child to receive a prize! (if you have found”nearly” all the characters why not ask the friendly reception staff for an extra clue?)

We snapped some children we spotted doing the family trail, using the family bags and the dressing up stations! We re-produce this photograph with their permission.                          THANK YOU! >>

Explore our fun interactive galleries and discover Saddleworth’s unique heritage through hands-on activities around the museum. Have a go at our Family Trail prize draw, make a Victorian toy and weave some threads inspired by our infamous Dobcross Loom. Or if dressing up is your thing, put yourself in the picture as a Morris Man or local suffragette Annie Kenney (uploading to Facebook optional!).

From Ice Age animal bones, Viking Jewellery and accessible Victorian room, to name just a few of the exhibits, there really is something for all ages and interests.

LATEST GALLERY NEWS: The weaving and “cogs” interactives continue to be popular. The dressing up stations continue to go down well and we love receiving visitor’s photographs of themselves in costume, keep them coming! The activity table, on the first floor in gallery 3, is not be missed and continues to be refreshed, at the moment we have a temporary colouring station on that table..the curator January 2019.

Family Bags

Magic Monday (or Take Away Tuesday)

Our afternoons of school holiday fun (primarily half term February, Summer Holidays & half term October).

For the 4 to 11 year olds we currently tend to run our bookable (priced at around £3 per child) Magic Mondays (or Museum Makes) in our community gallery with a free “colouring-in” table for the under 4’s and refreshments available to purchase for all. It is possible to “drop in” but spaces are limited so it is suggested parents book places in advance. We often run 4 or 5 tables with a variety of creative craft activity mostly with a seasonal theme. Children can take away what they have made.

We occasionally run Special Saturdays or Takeaway Tuesdays inside the museum exhibition galleries (admission prices apply – £6 for a family ticket) when parent and child can also wander around our galleries, dressing up stations and explore the interactives. We usually run 1 or 2 tables with creative crafts inspired by the museum displays. Children can take away what they have made.

Please note that for all types of activities for children inside the museum they must be accompanied at all times by a parent, grandparent or guardian.

Please check the Events page on this website and our Facebook page for the school holiday activity dates.

The gallery of photos from one of our Take Away Tuesday half term events are re-produced here with the permission of all those featured.     MANY THANKS >>

NEW for 2020!
